Substance Abuse in Veterans

Many of our country’s bravest men and women return home from different countries where they face unknown perils and risk their lives regularly. The memories of their encounters away also follow them home, most of which may be horrific. If not addressed, this may be the genesis of mental health problems and other difficulties.

In other cases, adjusting to civilian life might be a problem for veterans. They may find it difficult to connect with family or keep a job. Living a regular life might seem like a huge change that can be difficult to adapt to for them.

To cope with these issues, veterans may resort to taking alcohol and drugs to give them temporary relief. While this may seem to work, some drugs and alcohol alter our brain chemistry in such a way that we become addicted or dependent on them.

Over time with continued drug and alcohol use, veterans may develop a substance use disorder. At this point, the face of battle has changed from fighting for freedom to fighting against substance abuse.

If you or a loved one is a veteran who has served the country and has now returned home to face this new war against substance abuse, you are not alone. You can get assistance right now at a rehab for veterans.

If you are looking for a Redlands veteran rehab center, call Destiny Recovery Center today to see how we can offer assistance to you or your loved one.

Importance of Veterans Connecting With Veterans During Treatment

UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION IN VETERANS

Why is Addiction Rates High Among Veterans?

To better understand why addiction rates are high among veterans, we need to understand where the substance abuse tendencies lie compared to the general public.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that a pattern has emerged in which veterans use marijuana more frequently than other illegal substances after they reintegrate into society. According to research, 3.5% of Veterans reported using marijuana within the last month.

From 2002 to 2009, the number of veterans receiving treatment for cannabis use disorders at the Veterans Health Administration increased significantly (by more than 50%).

One of the difficulties veterans struggle with is chronic pains, for which they need medical professionals for pain management. According to the NIDA, the Veterans Health Association reported a rise in the percentage of Veterans receiving care who were given opioid prescriptions for pain relief from 17% to 24%. Veterans experienced an upsurge in overdoses between 2010 and 2016, although most of these overdoses were not brought on by prescription opioids.

Again, according to NIDA, a 2017 study revealed that veterans had a higher likelihood of using alcohol and drinking more than non-veterans. Also, research shows that more than half of Veterans who enroll in addiction treatment centers have an alcohol use disorder.

Given the statistics and addiction rates among veterans above, you may be wondering why the rates are so high. Various factors can trigger substance abuse among veterans.

Some of these are:

Trauma

One of the leading causes of addiction among veterans is trauma. Trauma is a response to a deeply disturbing or distressing experience such as accidents, natural disasters, chronic sickness, injury, terrorism, seeing someone die, and physical or sexual abuse. This can cause emotional, physical, spiritual, or psychological damage. For a veteran, the experience(s) of battle may be a traumatic experience.

During a traumatic event, you could feel endangered or incredibly terrified, to the point that the fear sticks with you.

While some people may recover from the impacts of exposure to trauma, others may have recurring flashbacks or memories of the events, which may make it difficult for them to live a complete life. This may give way to a mental illness termed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Many veterans experience PTSD, which is also referred to as “shell shock” among military troops, and use drugs or alcohol to cope with the symptoms.

Mental Health Problem

Addiction and mental illness are closely related, particularly in veterans. Mental conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and others frequently co-occur with substance use disorders.

Untreated mental diseases can make it difficult for veterans to lead a complete life. As a way of coping with the anger, stress, and unhappiness brought on by these mental health problems, many veterans resort to abusing drugs and alcohol for relief. This gives way to co-occurring disorders, which can seriously affect a person’s health.

Returning to “Regular” Life After Deployment

Veterans are not only more likely to develop a drug addiction as a result of mental illnesses, battle exposure, injuries, and military sexual assault, but they may also suffer with the transition back to civilian life.

After serving in the military for a long time, veterans may find adjusting to life after deployment is difficult. After often being exposed to extreme violence, there is a change in their mentality and character, often affecting how they connect with those around them.

This difficulty in adjusting leads veterans to abuse drugs as a way to fit into normal life.

Even though it seems difficult to escape substance abuse as a veteran, all hope is not lost. Various veteran rehab centers scattered around the country can help you.
