The Importance of Traveling Your Own Path to Recovery

Although sobriety and recovery share certain parallels, recovery goes beyond refraining from drugs and alcohol. Finding oneself without the need for drugs or alcohol is the goal of recovery. Various aspects of recovery aid in personal development, peace of mind, and discovery of the core identity that existed before addictive coping mechanisms were adopted. Traveling your own path in recovery is essential for discovering a road that leads to a happier life, a different path than where addiction leads you.

What is the Importance of Traveling Your Own Path in Recovery?

Recovery from addiction is a personal process; you need a unique holistic approach to go on the journey successfully. The road to recovery can take many forms.

People will select their pathway based on their cultural values, socioeconomic status, behavioral and psychological needs, and the type of substance use disorder. But it is necessary to travel your own path in recovery. Let’s see a few reasons why:

Getting Inspired

A recovery process nearly always starts with a reason when a person decides to give up drugs and start living in recovery—whether it’s the need to rescue their family, become well, or overcome their addiction. While traveling your own path in recovery, you may find things that motivate you to keep going; this will inspire you to continue and see that you achieve the desired results.

The key is to establish solid personal integrity, together with goals and a clear focus on the future. This implies that you start living with goals rather than habits and that you build a system for maintaining that drive every day.

A personal trainer, beginning a yoga practice, or joining a gym are all excellent strategies to keep your motivation to lead a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Creating Self-Related Relationships

The connection you have with yourself frequently requires the most significant improvement while you walk the path to recovery.

People who have lived with addiction experience feelings of shame, guilt, regret, and remorse for their choices and the results of those choices. Some of your most significant efforts will be in finding peace, forgiveness, acceptance, and compassion for yourself.

Why Is There No “One-Size-Fits-All” Treatment?

We have established that recovery from addiction is not a corporate process but a personal one. Finding a road that leads to a happier life, away from active addiction or alcoholism, has no right or wrong approach; everyone is on a different path to the same destination. This is the basis of no “one-size-fits-all” treatment.

There are several options for diverse recovery routes available today, including (but not limited to) 12-step-based recovery, clinical therapy, SMART Recovery, culturally-specific recovery paths, and peer recovery support groups.

What are the Levels of Care Available for Substance Abuse Treatment?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has identified five primary levels of care for drug use disorders. They are:

Early intervention therapy at level 0.5

Adults and adolescents at risk for SUD but do not fulfill the diagnostic criteria specified by the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders are given information, resources, and counseling as part of early intervention treatment.

Level I: Non-hospitalization

Less than nine hours per week for adults and less than six hours per week for adolescents are spent in Level 1 outpatient therapy. The regularly scheduled sessions are conducted by addiction specialists or qualified clinicians at a nonresidential treatment facility or a practitioner’s office.

Level II: Intensive Outpatient/Partial Hospitalization

This is a non or partial hospitalization program. It may involve sessional checkups during the day or on weekends. Patients may be required to stay in the clinic or rehab center the whole day.

Level III: Residential/Inpatient care

During an inpatient rehab program, a person receives the highest level of care, where living within a treatment facility during the length of the treatment.

Level IV: Medically Supervised, Intensive Care

Adults and adolescents with acute degrees of intoxication and withdrawal potential and those with physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive challenges can get nursing and medical care around-the-clock at Level 4.
